Nature Physics rejected my paper for peer review.  In retrospect I am not surprised because I am naïve about many things.  I attach my rebuttal below.  I thought that the first rejection might have been an oversight, but a second is indefensible:

“No interest; nothing new.”

Editorial policy has changed little since my paper was rejected in 2013 (which I admit, did lack the key point), so I gave up publishing until now.

Nature Physics believes I lack credibility as do my claims, but my paper is about spin and I have about 130 papers on that topic, mostly in peer reviewed journals.

Whether you think I am a crackpot or not, claims like I am making deserve a peer review which would settle the matter.  I have no intention of pursuing Nature after they have made their views clear about supporting non-locality by refusing descension. Unfortunately, postmodernism has moved into physics denying its logic and objectivity.

I am also asking Nature Physics to retract the paper:
Challenging local realism with human choices
Its conclusion is incorrect.

Here is a paragraph from my rebuttal below about reviewers:

“I have already suggested names: Anton Zeiliger and Jan-Åke Larsson are two, both of whom are convinced that non-local entanglement is a property of Nature, both are authors on the “Big Bell Test” and do not support my views. I suggested Sabine Hossenfelder, famous for her clear videos on Physics.  I suggested to you both J. Maldacena and L. Susskind and other distinguished physicists. I am convinced my work is unassailable, and no one will be able refute my main conclusions which I have stood by, albeit in less convincing ways, for 15 years.  “
In earlier correspondence, I suggested to Nature M. van Raamsdonk, and Gerald van t’Hooft and several more.

Physics Nature does not want me to publish my rebuttal below, citing confidentiality and copyright.

IS THERE NO EDITOR OUT THERE WHO WILL GIVE MY PAPER A FAIR PEER REVIEW?  “A horse, a horse….!”

My Rebuttal to Nature after their first rejection:

Title:  xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Your reference: #XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

February 14, 2022

Dear Dr. XXXXXXXXX,

RE: Formal rebuttal of your negative decision.
Request to Nature Physics to retract a publication.

I challenge your decision not to send out my paper for peer review. You cannot have understood the significance of my paper and I invite you to reconsider.  At the same time, with this communication, I am requesting the retraction of the paper you published: Challenging local realism with human choices. This paper is fundamentally flawed.
After checking the criterion to confirm, the primary role of an editor, it seems to me, is not to determine the veracity of claims, but to decide if claims fall within the prevue of your journal, and if there is sufficient interest for your readership. In the absence of obvious errors, you are obliged to take claims seriously. With respect to my claims, please note that I have given you ample evidence of their significance in my cover letter.
I submit:

  1. The paper is firmly within your mandate of topics. Indeed, it is in the same category as most of those papers I have listed at the end and published by Nature. The difference between those papers and mine is, I refute non-local entanglement, and they support the notion.
  1. Consider a few of my claims:
    1. I have resolved the EPR paradox
    2. I have disproven Bell’s Theorem
    3. I have proven that non-local entanglement is not possible
      1. Quantum teleportation and cryptography are fundamentally flawed.
      2. Quantum computing must re-examine its foundations.
  • ……
  1. ………..

If true, these will have enormous impact on physics, and therefore of great interest to your readers: from the lay to the expert.  I have written the paper with goal of giving a general and deeper understanding of our Mother Nature at the microscopic level, that would attract the interest of your interdisciplinary physics audience, and yet also be unassailable by the expert.

Here are your reasons for not having my paper peer-reviewed:

“These decisions are made by the editorial staff, taking into account the probable appeal of the work to a broader physics community, as well as the likelihood that it would seem of great topical interest to those working in related areas of physics.

In the present case, although your findings may well prove stimulating to others working to understand the physics of Bell’s inequalities, I regret that we are unable to conclude that the work provides the sort of broad advance in general understanding that would attract the interest of our wide and interdisciplinary physics audience.”

My paper is about the Foundations of Physics. Bell’s Inequalities (BI) are not challenged and are fully accepted as mathematically correct.  BI play a minor role in my paper, and do not figure at all in my main results, except as a measure guide. Hence, I submit that your above assessment is incomplete, incorrect and does not take my claims seriously.

Here is a bit of my background: In 1997 non-locality got my attention; in 2006, I had a seminal idea but encountered enormous opposition.  I was missing a key feature, and I could not fully justify my ideas.  That changed and this paper has the final key that repudiates non-local entanglement—to physics this should be greeted with enthusiasm and welcomed by all except for those in Quantum Information Theory, for which my paper will be shattering news.

In response to my views, I have been dismissed as a Quantum Crackpot, a chemist, and a Local Realist. In 2009 I was blacklisted from arXiv for my views, and all my subsequent papers were rejected without review. NSERC* Physics division dismissed my research as pseudo-science.  As tenured, I did not need to publish, so I puzzled, listened, and read until I found the Achilles heel of non-locality, which I got last December. This paper is the first of two, and they constitute 25 years of my research.                                                     *Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada

Since, I suggest, your reasons not to send my paper out for peer review cannot be supported, you can understand, from the above that my first reaction to your rejection was paranoia.  I have doubts about impartiality when refused even a peer review of such impactful claims. By accepting so many papers that support non-local entanglement, while rejecting my one descension gave me the impression your journal is biased in protecting Quantum Information Theory by not accepting dissenting views.  On the other hand, I would prefer the rejection to have resulted from an error in judgement on the part of overworked editors.

Request for retractions:  Please see the papers listed at the end obtained by googling in Google Scholar: “Nature Springer entanglement.”  I pasted only the first few pages of a great many.  I have not checked for duplicates, nor if some were not published by Nature.  Nonetheless it is abundantly clear that Nature has given wide voice to almost any topic promoting non-local entanglement.

Your website discusses integrity of your published work:

“We achieve this by having clear processes to investigate allegations of publication and research misconduct and clear policies around corrections, editorial expressions of concern and retractions.  These involve working closely in the first instance with the authors and, where appropriate, the authors’ institution(s).”

I am hereby stating that the conclusions and theoretical methodology in many of those papers (not all) are fundamentally flawed, and that many other papers you have published in quantum information are also incorrect.

I request that Springer Nature retract the paper, Challenging local realism with human choices, (Nature, volume 557, pages 212-216 (2018)) with about 100 authors, including dice-tossing students. That paper’s statistics are interpreted to support the idea that non-locality is a property of Mother Nature and closes the “Freedom-of-choice” loophole (thereby mixing up EPR with ESP). I have no argument with, nor interest in, the data, but they claim local realism is not viable, and non-locality is demonstrated in their “Big Bell Test”.

The “freedom-of-choice loophole” is the possibility that the experimental settings that are machine-chosen are influenced by `hidden variables’ which might correlate with the particle properties, whereas human choices cannot, according to Bell that is. Hence this paper is all about replacing, say, a mathematical random number generator with humans who make the choices in a computer game.

Since I show that local hidden variables exist and resolve the EPR paradox, their findings cannot be supported.  I assert that you must retract this paper because its conclusions are incorrect due to a fundamental error in their understanding of violation of Bell’s Inequalities. Rather their data shows just the opposite: evidence for local realism!  Since the conclusions are incorrect, the paper should be withdrawn.

In your rejection of my paper, you say there is little interest in Bell Inequalities, yet you allow almost pointless papers like this to be published, which are peer reviewed by others in their “Old boys’ Club”* in self-perpetuating rounds of mutual-admiration. This paper does not promote science, but rather an idea no one understands, non-locality.  Yet I come along and claim to have solved the EPR paradox, which will justify this retraction, along with a complete reformulation of Quantum Theory right down to the Standard Model and am rejected because

“we are unable to conclude that the work provides the sort of broad advance in general understanding that would attract the interest of our wide and interdisciplinary physics audience.”!
* I deliberately leave out women.

Please note that upon a positive Peer Review of my paper most of the papers that you published that support non-locality will be withdrawn or relegated to the Annals of Lost Causes and Bad Ideas—a substantial failure on the part of any Journal when literally hundreds of papers over the last 25 years are wrong.  Editors accepted papers without demanding a clear explanation of non-locality. Rather than logic, they accepted revelation from authors, in the form of “quantum weirdness” (Weihs, G. The truth about reality. Nature 445, 723–724 2007) which has become mainstream in science and tooted as a phenomenon beyond our comprehension. I would submit that this is partly a result of the weight your Journal carries in publishing such papers.

Physics is logic, I submit, not religion

On the other hand, all physics journals were also similarly swayed by astonishing claims of “teleportation”, between little Swiss villages and the moon.  Editors accepted statements that “Relativity is incomplete”, and the hackneyed use of “non-local collapse” (If Alice is up, Bob must instantly collapse to down) without a clear understanding what that means and its consequences. Few seemed to question the unphysical nature of instant-action-at-a-distance” and rallied around Bell’s Theorem which is based upon the washing of socks!

Returning to my submission, I hope that I have convinced you to reverse your decision and send my paper out for review. Nature Physics has the impact I seek and need to change the engrained views of 60 years of non-locality and 90 years of rejection of EPR. I could not let a dismissive decision by you and your colleagues stand in the way without challenge.

I have no concerns about who is asked to review my work.  I only expect professional knowledge of quantum theory and its foundations; honesty; and a fair and unbiased assessment from both editors and reviewers.

I have already suggested names: Anton Zeiliger and Jan-Åke Larsson are two, both of whom are convinced that non-local entanglement is a property of Nature, both are authors on the “Big Bell Test” and do not support my views.

I heed your website and believe you and your colleagues do honestly strive to meet high ethical standards that Nature is known for. I have no doubts that once in the Peer Review process is underway, your editors will have no difficulty distinguishing between the good, the bad and the ugly,

Yours sincerely

Bryan Sanctuary

So: self-publish your paper. Recruit some support from established scientists. Let them write to Nature that the journal should give your paper a serious review, because they can see that you have indeed done the amazing, namely discovered [ … what? …] which indeed must completely overturn the scientific consensus on Bell’s theorem and quantum non locality.
